Few sightings
This is one of the latest notes from the Wood Pigeon Club regarding the 2024 step: “Dear Members and Wood Pigeon Hunting enthusiasts, up until now wood pigeons very few have passed through our observation posts. Sporadic sightings here and there in the central-northern regions have characterised the period from the end of September to today. In fact, from northern Europe, the Swedish observatory of Falsterbo, the migrating wood pigeons recorded in the first days of October have been very few. Fortunately, the trend has changed so much that the counts speak of approximately 78 thousand wood pigeons that have passed through in the last five days, a clear sign that the impulse to leave has been important. It was hoped that by the beginning of October, from the neighbouring countries of the East, nesting populations not far from our coasts, Croatia and Slovenia for example, would arrive (and to a small extent perhaps this has happened on Mesola and the woods of the Veneto and Friulian coast), but as already said, overall there have been very few arrivals and practically nothing on our passage lines”.
Food resources
“It is not just a question of unfavorable weather, as is often said; other factors come into play such as the photoperiod and the food resources that wild birds find along their path. There are many “Mesola” around Europe, as my friend Rinaldo Bucchi always says, and these numerous “tables set” are an irresistible invitation to stop for our beloved wood pigeons. At this point, what is the current situation? We are approaching mid-October, the impulse to migrate in wild birds is increasing, hundreds of thousands of wood pigeons have already left and are probably still leaving from northern Europe, and the same thing is likely happening in the countries of the North-East”.
What could happen
"The negative influences of the latest disturbance will vanish quite quickly between today, Thursday 10th and tomorrow, Friday 11th October, leaving room for a vast area of high pressure that will affect much of Europe. What could happen? It is more than reasonable to think that large contingents of wood pigeons coming directly from the nesting regions or from the stopover areas, will arrive and pass through our territory, probably starting tomorrow when the winds will be from the east, north-east. It would not even be a surprise if they crossed the Adriatic tonight. What can I say, a big good luck to everyone, Members, Friends, enthusiasts: may the sky above your hides be full of flights".
