Italian migration pass. While Song Thrushes with Capinere and Pettirossi they thrilled the week from 3 to 9 October, with the peak of the pass on Wednesday 6, respecting the classic date of S. Bruno that our old men considered it one of the best after that of S. Michele which falls on 29 September (both respected this year in the post-nuptial step), now the Finches and Sparrow sweepers move with interest.
From some areas we receive news of the very first presence of Sassello and Cesena thrush, but they are simple signs of very few individuals running towards the wintering shores. They are joined by a few more trans-Saharans.
For the next few days, everything will depend on the high pressure that remains firmly on the Scandinavian peninsula, determining conditions of prevailing stability, while a vast cold depression condition affects central Europe and the Balkans with conditions of widespread stability. If a "preferential channel" is maintained between these two situations, we will have a highway to heaven that can be excellently traveled by our winged friends.
Once again we must consider the weather conditions that weigh on Europe hoping that they are not unfavorable perturbations. Returning to the avifauna there is no significant news regarding the Frosoni still fugitives, while the Siskin and the Lark, together with the Pipit, are beginning to appear patchy on the territory.
In the high hills there are news of the first withdrawals of Woodcock, while the Beccaccini are still being desired. Finally, among the anatids, the Teals and the Codons have been observed in good numbers, as well as for the Wood pigeons.
It stops briefly but then resumes the thrush pass. The second week of September was characterized by storms and tornadoes in the center-north and the migration was interrupted by Wednesday 12 due to an intense depressionary vortex that has embraced much of Western Europe, while an anticyclonic field has protected Scandinavia by favoring prevailing good weather conditions. In this way, the high pressure, present as far as Greece - from where a strong pass by Tordi bottacci was reported to us on the 14th, with a peak on Sunday 16th - and Turkey, created "a highway" that favored migration of our winged friends.
Finally, on Sunday 16, the sun returned to shine with a discreet movement of our song Thrushes present (also on the morning of Monday 17) however positively this season, except during the bad weather of the past few days. There is also the appearance of some contingents of finches, pipits and skylarks in migration. To them are added the wood pigeons and the first sasselli thrushes, as well as sporadic woodcocks, already reported also in the low hills.
Finally, also on Sunday, the first Frosone in post-nuptial migration was ringed at the FEIN Ornithological Observatory in Arosio, and we hope that this is the prelude to a good movement of the hitherto absent species. And the same goes for the first Siskin on Monday 17th, while on the afternoon of Sunday 16th another example of Black Balia was ringed, never caught so late!
