Concern for the rises increasingly massive presence of the wolf on Montebaldino territory, especially after the latest predation - with the killing of four sheep - which took place last Thursday in broad daylight, near the houses and a few hundred meters from the parish church of Spiazzi. On the one hand, local politics appeals to the Region to try to stem the phenomenon, on the other the population begins not to feel too calm, with possible negative implications also for tourism, including religious tourism. In the meantime, however, the regional table for wolf management met in Venice with the presentation of the latest data on the carnivore control project. "We can't go on like this", says Maurizio Castellani, president of the Union Montana Baldo Garda and mayor of San Zeno di Montagna, annoyed.
“Although it is not possible to eliminate the wolves, it is necessary to contain them, through specific control plans by the Region. We are aware that we cannot intervene as with wild boars, but strong and concrete signals must arrive from Venice », says the Montebaldino administrator. "Reimbursing farmers for the damage suffered is not enough, as well as inserting fences. We cannot fence off the whole Baldo. Different actions are needed to eliminate the underlying problem, in order to allow farms to work with a minimum of serenity and the population to be calm. Because if it is true that the wolf does not attack people, it is not even pleasant to find it close to inhabited centers. The risk always remains ». Even the mayor of Caprino Paola Arduini admits that the problem exists.
“People are afraid. The important and delicate theme is on the table of the Province and Region and it is undeniable that it is difficult to manage but we must act ». Even Davide Mazzola, Caprino's municipal councilor for security and tourism does not hide «that there is a bit of apprehension. Hopefully these approaching episodes of the carnivore to the countries remain isolated. However they make us reflect, also due to a possible negative effect on tourists in the area, including religious tourism, which is clearly growing in the area of Spiazzi and its surroundings, especially that towards the Madonna della Corona, with the opening of the Marian Jubilee Year, which allows for a twelve-month-long tourist season of the year. The institutions must intervene in a concrete way ». On the other hand, Sabrina Da Prati, president of the Monte Baldo Est association dedicated to the promotion of the territory, has a different opinion.
"We are in the mountains and the presence of wildlife is to be taken into account", he underlines. "Episodes like those of last week can happen, even if we understand the difficulties that breeders and farms affected by the attacks may encounter. But I don't think there can be negative repercussions from a tourism point of view, at least at the moment ». He also intervenes on the subject Louis Molinari, zoologist of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park, within which he also works as a consultant for Wolf Apennine Center. The expert comments in particular on the progressive approach of the wolf to the inhabited areas of the Baldo.
«Given that wolves now live permanently also in the Po Valley, in close contact with people, the approach to homes is dictated only by the presence of food, from livestock to household waste. Basic wolves fear humans, their only real danger. They can only become potentially dangerous if you make them less fearful, for example by making food available to them. It is therefore necessary to avoid giving him this possibility. I understand how managing the situation is not easy for breeders. But mechanical or electrified metal fences and the presence of LGDs can stem the problem, on which ", confirms Molinari," it is also necessary to intervene the Regions with dedicated funds "(Arena).
