The motion of the League
" presence of the wolf in our mountains and valleys is becoming increasingly problematic. For this reason today in the Regional Council we have presented, as the Lega Group, a motion to request that a detailed annual table of predation be published, divided between farm animals and domestic animals and an estimate of the presence of wolves within the regional borders. We have also requested that DNA samples be collected in emergency rooms, following attacks or predation, from the wounds of the victims, whether they are humans or animals, in order to distinguish whether they are wolves or dog-wolf hybrids”. This is how the Lega regional councilors Silvana Snider and Floriano Massardi comment on the approval today in the Council Chamber of a motion on health and veterinary practices in relation to wolf predation.
Sightings of the last few months
“According to a study by Life WolfAlps EU, there are 950 specimens present in the Alpine regions of our country; there is a high probability of a very high presence in Lombardy where the animal has colonized some of the suitable environments. The result is that we are increasingly witnessing attacks on flocks that risk seriously damaging an important economic sector of Lombardy. In recent years, according to data from Coldiretti, in Lombardy there have been 150 predations and 300 sightings in the last six months. Sheep and goat farms are among the most affected. Furthermore, according to this data, in the last ten years, throughout Italy predators have contributed to the closure of eight hundred stables and killed sixty-five thousand heads of sheep and goats. Sightings are daily and with them the concern of the inhabitants grows”, explain Snider and Massardi.
Attacks on animals and people
They add: "And there is a new problem: a significant percentage of these predators are unfortunately now represented by hybrids between wolves and dogs and this phenomenon represents a strongly negative factor, not only for the conservation of the genetic purity of the wolf itself, but because it leads to an increase in attacks on animals and people. We at the League are convinced that, in a territory like ours, characterized by rich biodiversity but also by real challenges for safety and for the agricultural-livestock sector, it is essential to adopt concrete and scientifically supported measures. Our approach represents an attempt to harmonize the coexistence between man and nature, in the need to find a virtuous balance". "With the adoption of DNA sampling and analysis carried out directly at the emergency room, we will be able to intervene with precision, ensuring that each episode is managed promptly and effectively, to protect our citizens and the farms in our areas", conclude Snider and Massardi.
