Narborough, a Sardinian town of 1800 inhabitants which is located on the border with Campidano di Oristano, is in the center of a series of controversies about the killing of wild boars. The newspaper La nuova sardegna explained what is happening in the island country. There Province of Oristano launched and kicked off the plan a few weeks ago that includes a series of hunts for reduce the total number of ungulates, an increasingly urgent threat in the fields and beyond. The problem is very current in Sardinia as well as in other Italian regions, but in this case the criticisms are very strong. The Sardinian newspaper recalled how this is not an absolute novelty, given that there have already been controlled culls of the species in the past that have avoided worse damage to crops.
In addition, the excessive number of wild boars can account for a health problem. The Province's plan was designed precisely to meet farmers and to prevent electrification networks and supports from being ruined. In short, we are not talking about anything strange or unusual. The main controversy that has been raised has to do with the alleged failure to warn the Fauna Committee and associations. In addition, the selection of hunters in charge of killing the ungulates would have taken place without having first summoned the whole group of assistants, who are called into question in situations such as the one that is being explored.
The Hunting Office of the provincial administration has contacted the Forest Guard and then independently decided to start the initiative, without the 45 volunteers being asked. Twelve of these people were called directly without there being a selection and they were the only ones to participate in the hunting sessions. According to the Province of Oristano itself, the selected volunteers would be trustworthy people, but the preferences compared to others were not at all appreciated.
Among other things, even the fact that it is not yet known what happened to the wild boars killed so far. In Sardinia, therefore, a new hunting topic is added, full of ideas after the local associations met and made it clear that there is no need for Territorial Hunting Areas on the island. The controversy over wild boars seems only at the beginning and it is not clear how the various positions can be smoothed out: there will most likely be major updates as early as April.
