Greater awareness
The news is circulating in recent days - taken up with emphasis worthy of greater and more pressing issues also by some newspapers that have made the anti-hunting campaign almost the only reason for living (or survival?) - that the ANICAV - National Association Industriali Conserve Alimentari Vegetali, an association representing private companies operating in the tomato processing sector, has turned to various hunting associations, including ours, to ask them to raise awareness among hunters of the risk for the sector, and consequently for consumers, of the abandonment of cartridge cases shoot in the tomato fields. In this regard, President Buconi assured his interest, while also placing emphasis on other aspects worthy of reflection.
The FIDC letter
Below is the text of President Federcaccia's response:
“Dear Doctor De Angelis, in response to your letter dated February 27th, we would like to inform you that we have asked our sections in the area to raise the awareness of our members on the problem you have highlighted, but would like to point out to you that the law on hunting already provides for the obligation to collect used cartridge cases and not abandon them in the environment. However, as consumers we allow ourselves to express some concern in the face of your statement regarding the impossibility of detecting foreign bodies in the product intended for food processing, whether in plastic or metal, materials certainly not linked to the production of ammunition cases alone hunting".
A shared solution
The note continues: “As regular visitors to the countryside, we cannot help but notice how both are often present even in cultivated areas in the most disparate forms and how the problem cannot therefore be attributed only to hunting practices. Obviously it is not our intention to justify the behavior of those hunters who ignore not only a legal requirement, as mentioned, but also a very normal practice of good behavior and respect by avoiding abandoning "waste" in the environment, but we believe that the same request for attention also to all other visitors to the countryside, including agricultural operators. In any case, we are available to find a shared solution to the problem. We extend our cordial greetings" (Press Office of the Italian Hunting Federation).
