Fallow Deer Emergency: The first fallow deer of the Pineta di Classe, considered in supernumerary, were killed on Wednesday morning. These are four or five specimens, which came out of the pine forest to go to some horticultural crops.
The plan developed by the Province to reduce the number of deer (currently two hundred) and implemented by the ATC RA2 became operational last Monday. The selection controllers who climbed onto the viewing platforms set up outside the pine forest waited in vain on Monday. On Wednesday, however, a few deer emerged into the countryside surrounding the pine forest and were shot. The selection plan calls for the culling of 63 deer. The reasons behind the decision to reduce the number of deer in the Classe Pine Forest are related to the damage caused to farmers who farm the area and to road accidents on the Adriatica highway caused by the ungulates. The selection, which began on December 8th, must be concluded by Saturday, February 28th, 2015. The decision to proceed with the culling of the ungulates was accompanied by heated controversy, which in two cases resulted in acts of vandalism, such as when a selection controller's car was defaced and three viewing platforms were damaged. Some people have offered to house the deer, but – says the Province – the law does not allow any other option than culling them.
In the hunting world and within the ATC, however, there is a certain pessimism. «We are considered killers - explains a selecontroller - and uncontrolled levels of controversy have been reached. How can you say that over 60 fallow deer from the Classe pine forest can be housed in an eleven-hectare enclosure? Scientific books explain that two pairs of fallow deer can live on eleven hectares. Why insist then? ».
«We operate in objectively intolerable conditions - adds another selecontroller - and I believe that the Province is thinking of suspending the activity. I don't know when we will return to the rooftops ».
Yesterday at 15 pm, in the meantime, Eleonora Schonwald, Alvaro Ancisi and Francesca Santarella presented the announcement exposed in the Prosecutor's Office.
