London 2012 Olympic Games: Massimo Fabbrizi is Silver Medal in the Men's Trap, the carabiniere from Monteprandone (AP) misses the gold in the shoot-off.
The skeet shooting competitions at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London close with a medal for Italy. Massimo Fabbrizi, XNUMX-year-old carabiniere from Monteprandone (AP), climbs to the second step of the Olympic podium of Trap Maschile, giving himself a wonderful silver.
Massimo entered the final with a score of 123/125, third best behind the perfect Australian Michael Diamond, first with 125, and the Kuwaiti Fehaid Aldeeani, second with 124. In the decisive series Massimo knew he had to give his all to make up for the disadvantage . Two mistakes spoiled his ride to the result but, fortunately, the other contenders were not perfect either.
At the end of the 25 regular targets, the two leaders of the provisional classification had left their grip on the two leading positions, firmly in the hands of the blue and the Croatian Giovanni Cernogoraz, paired at the top of the final classification with a total of 146/150. Olympic record equaled by the two and a sure medal for both.
In the shoot-off for gold, Cernogoraz and Fabbrizi faced each other evenly up to the 5th target, but once the sequence of the platforms started from the beginning, Massimo missed the sixth target giving, in fact, the gold to the Croatian.
“The shoot-off is like penalty kicks, sooner or later someone misses and the other wins. In this case I made a mistake and the gold went to Giovanni (Cernogoraz, ed) but I am still very happy ”. In Fabbrizi's words there is no bitterness. He knows he has given his all and has achieved an unexpected result, given the fever over 39c, the plaques in his throat and the antibiotic treatment with which he had to fight until the day before the official training sessions.
“Now I can safely say, when I arrived in London it was difficult to be able to stand on my legs. The first day on the platform my knees gave out. I don't want to be a hero and use the fever as a justification but, trust me, many of my colleagues wouldn't have risen to shoot. Luckily I have the physique! " The Marchigiano jokes, and closes with a dedication "This medal is for all those who have made it possible but I dedicate it to a person who does not expect it for sure: my sister Alessia". In third place the Kuwaiti Aldeeani with the total of 145 +4 after the shoot-off with Diamond, only fourth with 145 +3.
The XXX Summer Olympics ends here for Shooting. A gold and a title of Olympic Champion conquered by Jessica Rossi in the Women's Trap, complete with the initials on five world records, and the silver in the Men's Trap conquered by Massimo Fabbrizi. A positive balance that, while not equaling the 2008 Beijing record (they were one gold and two silvers), demonstrates how the Italian clay pigeon shooting school in the world.
