The City of pedara, in the province of Catania, has issued an ordinance relating to the protection zone for the purposes of prophylaxis of myxomatosis of the wild rabbits. The document recalls how this disease affects rabbits and hares: it is transmitted through insects and to prevent its spread they need urgent measures. Man and other animals are not affected, but the mayor has ordered that the municipal territory becomes a protection zone.
This means that in the delimited areas there must be signs specific tables in agreement with the Province of Catania. Furthermore, it will be forbidden to enter and remove live or dead rabbits from this area. The obligation of periodic veterinary health surveillance will also be in force and wild rabbits hunted and presenting lesions referable to myxomatosis must be referred to the Veterinary Urban Hygiene Service.
These measures will remain valid for six months from when the last case of illness will be ascertained. Against the order it is possible to appeal to the Regional Administrative Court within 60 days of notification or to the Presidency of the Republic within 120 days.
