A serious episode
A peregrine falcon was unfortunately killed in Rome by gunshots, a classic episode that denotes the action of one (or more) poachers. LIPU extension (Italian League for the Protection of Birds) provided a very different interpretation, even if one could imagine how the matter would be explored further.
Hunting subjection
This is the note from the association: "While the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida was explaining the need for further hunting concessions, a peregrine falcon, part of a historic pair that nested in Rome, was killed in the city by a rifle shot. A very serious event indirectly caused by years of institutional inaction on the poaching front and by the incredible hunting subservience of this Government, which must be considered guilty. The peregrine falcon, found near the gasometer in Rome by a member of Ornis Italica, was transported to the LIPU recovery center in the capital, inside the Bioparco. The seriousness of the case immediately emerged from the x-rays carried out, with the bird of prey showing a compound-exposed fracture of the radius-ulna on the right wing and the presence of a pellet in the rear part. This pellet, hitting the animal, most likely caused the falcon to lose its course and crash, destroying, as mentioned, its wing".
New hunting concessions
Alessandro Polinori, president of LIPU, added: "Yet another act of poaching that sees animals of protected and super-protected species such as storks, hawks, golden eagles as victims, but no voice is raised by the Government, no action is taken and indeed the Minister of Agriculture Lollobrigida is proud to announce new hunting concessions. We are faced with an embarrassing situation, with the Italian Government in complete subservience to the hunting world, which it intends to pay homage to with yet another legislative gift, and completely indifferent to the problems of wild fauna. This, we regret to say, makes the Government indirectly guilty of the serious episodes of poaching that are taking place, legitimized by its silence and institutional disinterest".
