HP Performance Flakes - Rummaging through the old things of hunting, the 28/70 caliber is a constant for us since the beginning of the passion in the mid-50s with a nice Belgian double-barreled shotgun with external dogs so chambered with which a fervent lover of the shed had introduced us to this so fascinating hunting. At the time we had the two extremes represented by the parallel of the grandfather, a Sauer of the 12, and a single barrel Beretta in 9 Flobert then the 28 was inserted in a good medium and to us, fasting in ballistics, it showed how adequate it was in those shots at medium short distance on the branches of thrown.
With the advancement of age, the first Maestro left the professorship to the legendary Costantino, from Brescia transplanted to Turin, with a superfine art also in the breeding of calls, then allowed. Frequenting at the shed became a fixed commitment and we bought a single barrel of this caliber soon replaced by an over-and-under, the two barrels were a solution of very different caliber, and that 28 remained in the rack as in a wardrobe remains that old bag in which we have rummaged and from which the Marietti sickle, the hangers in twisted cord or plastic, still pop out, the flounder, incredible tool formed by many pieces of bicycle inner tube closed at the bottom by a screw block and at the head by many brass whistles: the art was in moving the wrist, so as not to tire the forearm, and to have a concert of peeps emitted in which many birds, sparrows above all, believed with confidence and curiosity; there are still some cartridges loaded by a Provaglio di Iseo gunsmith with 11 and 12 shots that were not adopted by anyone here.
The reason for all this preamble lies in the current production of cartridges for this caliber, the use of which has happily extended from the original pitfall to bird catches to the most classic of wandering hunts: the one with the dog. It seems to us that we should be grateful to the American inventiveness if we also use small calibers, in particular the 28 and .410 Mag., it has spread, touching every kind of hunting: it goes without saying that only some can claim to obtain success even on the geese they aim for the head with not big shots so as to thicken the grouping (good, indeed very good) with results that we do not hesitate to define as amazing, while most are satisfied with favorable outcomes, and repeated in high percentages, on the sedentary one.
The Fiocchi Performance HP
We had the pleasure of trying this recent cartridge from the Lecco company both in an over-and-under Beretta Mod. 690 Field I than in a Benelli Ethos chambered for the 28 Magnum and in which we alternated the Flakes 28/76 with these: the jump in weight is marked passing from 33 g to 24 g (- 27,3%), but the section of the dots that passes from 7 to 5 of the English numbering played favorably, therefore from 2,5 to 2,9 mm. In the semi-auto, equipped with the energy-absorbing pad, the recoil was already imperceptible with the Magnums so with these it is really a pleasure to shoot even for a kid. In the'AFV of Arborio, but equally with the 2.800 g over-and-under you can walk smoothly: thanks to the balance of the powder that ensures considerable acceleration without imposing annoying pressure peaks, and the PLC * container wad with shock-absorbing piston to keep the pellets intact in the barrel path, avoiding sliding on the walls or crushing from a quiet state at start-up.
The results were more than favorable, even at reasonable distances between 25 and 30 m where the 5 pellets, punctually present in the silhouette of the game, allow instant killing as verified on large pheasants, chuckar partridges and even a mini-jack that had stolen us. the first rod, but to which the 24 g of the 5 addressed with the second were fatal. To conclude, these are an excellent choice HP Performance that work to perfection with the most classic weight of this caliber that appears to us more and more exciting.
