In 2013-2014 crimes related to hunting increased throughout Italy, most of the episodes of poaching are concentrated in the provinces of Brescia (which has always been the black jersey of hunting illegality) with 8% of cases, followed by Salerno with 7%, and equal to Bergamo, Caserta and Reggio Calabria with 5%. The source of the data is obviously of an animal rights nature, CABS (Committee Against Bird Slaughter) and the League for the Abolition of Hunting, which have undertaken to accurately collect all demonstrable reports of crimes committed against wild animals in an attempt to prove a theory according to which poaching in Italy is practiced mainly by hunters with a hunting license for at least 81% and that illegal hunting is systematically widespread on the territory and is a real threat to birds and mammals, protected and not .
According to the data collected by animal rights activists, 81% of those guilty of crimes against wildlife are hunters in possession of a hunting license, while only 15,5% are attributed to pure poachers, without a license; moreover, about 70% of poaching concerns birds while only 30% concerns mammals among which, in the 2013-2014 season, two bears and at least 21 wolves were killed both by shotguns and by other methods such as traps and poisoned morsels . Not least are the birds of prey which according to statistics are common victims of poaching, with 121 specimens of various species of birds of prey shot down.
In animal rights statistics obviously there are not only cases of pure poaching but also the simplest hunting crimes such as the use of electromagnetic sounds, for about 22%, now ubiquitous, followed by the killing of super-protected species for 20% and finally 12% of offenses concern hunting in prohibited areas such as natural parks.
Most of the poaching episodes are concentrated in the provinces of Brescia (always black jersey of hunting illegality) with 8% of cases, followed by Salerno with 7%, and on equal merit Bergamo, Caserta and Reggio Calabria with the 5%; no less is the province of Foggia with 4% while the provinces of Cosenza, Cagliari, Lecce and Naples compete for 3%. On a regional basis, however, the primacy moves to the south with Campania which holds 17% of the episodes of national poaching followed a few lengths by Lombardy with 15%, Puglia with 11% and Calabria with 10%. The region that boasts only one report of poaching ascertained in flagrancy is the Val d'Aosta.
