Poaching: Manfredonia, two poachers were surprised while they were hunting in a protected area in the Capitanata countryside.
New intervention by the State Forestry Corps for the repression of offenses in the Daunian countryside and precisely of that hateful practice that is poaching. In the early morning of Sunday, LIPU activists - engaged in the usual monitoring of species and habitats of conservation interest on the rural areas affected by the migratory period with the arrival of larks, hawks, quail and other species that pass over our areas or settle to nest , in Masserie Tomaiuolo and equipped with binoculars, they noticed two poachers intent on shooting freely with a lot of hunting dogs in tow. The LIPU requested the intervention of the men of the Forestry Corps of the State of Manfredonia, who in a short time arrived in the area managing to stop and report two people intent on hunting birds as if it were a normal open season hunting day. The two poachers arrested were reported on the loose to answer for the crime of hunting in a period of general prohibition; the men of the Forestry also proceeded to the seizure of two hunting rifles and related ammunition found in the possession of the two braacconieri.
The action is coupled with those already conducted by the State Forestry Corps between January and February to counter the scourge of poaching close to the wetlands and in the countryside of the Capitanata. “The incident confirms that the phenomenon is very worrying and active. Hunting in prohibited periods or at night, with nets, recorders or other illicit means, killing protected species or hunting in protected areas, represent forms of poaching that are highly damaging to the naturalistic heritage of our territory and, we would dare to say, even the image of the hunters themselves. ”- says Enzo Cripezzi of the Apulian LIPU.
Continuing Cripezzi says - "Shooting precisely at the breeding stock selected by migration, in this period of beginning of nesting and pre-reproductive step, is deplorable as it causes additional damage to those most vulnerable bird populations and to the specimens that have the task of perpetuating vitality. of these populations ".
Not to mention that these practices also induce a strong disturbance in a delicate period to species of great importance and typical of our countryside such as lesser kestrels, harriers, big eyes. The LIPU expresses its appreciation for the commitment of the Forestry Corps in tasks and areas that are anything but simple, but also thanks those sensitive farmers who are often an active and proactive part for a better control and management of the territory.
