Cani da Seguita - Poitevin: A beautiful union of strength and lightness, the Poitevin is a dog that certainly does not go unnoticed. Born to hunt wolves, the Poitevin is literally tireless and gifted with an exceptional nose.
French to the last hair, the Poitevin is an exceptional hound whose breed was officially born in 1692.The efforts were made by a certain Marquis Fracois de Larrye who, crossing the Foxhound with different types of hounds, found this exceptional creature in his hands. After the real risk of disappearance of the breed during the French Revolution, in the past the hound has shone as a more than reliable companion during wolf hunting. It is said that he was able, during the hunts in search of wolves, to look for his prey for hundreds of kilometers, apparently not showing any fatigue.
Today French hunters consider him a great follow-up dog, constant and tireless. It is especially his great adaptability to any terrain, his energy and his grit that make him an amazing game hound. It is not only his strength that makes him a noteworthy dog, but also his particularly fine nose, which allows him to find the track even several hours after the passage of the wild.
Poitevin: Its elegance is immediately recognizable when you see it: it is unquestionably distinct and muscularly strong, light and endowed with soft and pleasant colors.
Normally the training of the Poitevin takes a lot of time and patience, but the results obtained are in the end quite satisfactory. Accustomed to living in a pack, the dog can easily establish friendly bonds with his companions. It should also be taken into consideration that it is a particularly energetic breed which therefore needs rather large spaces for everyday life. The advice is to organize long walks in the company of your Poitevin when it is not possible to go hunting: the dog really needs daily activity and movement.
Elongated head, rounded skull, evident nose and protruding bones are just some of the requirements of this beautiful hunting specimen. It also has a fine and medium length tail, and a tricolor coat with beautiful variations of black, white and orange. Generally from 62 to 72 cm tall, the weight does not normally exceed 30 kg.
It should also be remembered that the Poitevin needs half a kilo of food per day, to be divided into two meals, but when the dog is engaged in hunting periods, the doses must be increased.
The life of this type of dogs is not too long: they reach a maximum of 8 years and generally, despite being strong and resistant, they are subject to various diseases. For this reason, the advice is to regularly take your Poitevin to the vet.
