The first news about the breed dates back to 1700, some documents attest to the presence of the hound both in France and in Switzerland. Some documents testify how the hound came up in the United States as a gift from the King of France to President George Washington. Arriving in the late XNUMXth century through the Port of New Orleans, they were crossed with local hounds.
