A new classification
Controversy in the regional council over the suspension, decided by the junta, of the effectiveness of the contiguous area classification of the Portofino park to allow the killing of wild boars in this area as well. "The suspension of the effectiveness of the contiguous area classification of the Portofino Park - replies the vice president with responsibility for the Parks Alessandro Piana - with resolution of the Regional Council 1348/2022 responds to the priority need to comply with the objectives of reducing the wild boar population established by the National Surveillance Plan for African swine fever (ASP) and by the PRIU (Regional plan for urgent interventions for the management, control and eradication of African swine fever in farm pigs and wild boar species). One cannot complain with one hand about the presence of ungulates and with the other not allow the hunting of wild boar where it is required. And it's not a gift to hunters, as declared in the note by councilor Ugolini, who, moreover, have made themselves available among the volunteers for monitoring since the embryonic stages of the Psa ".
High concentration of wild boars
“This distribution area - continues Piana -, located in the zone subject to restrictions I (surveillance area), is characterized by a significant concentration of wild boars that go as far as the neighboring urban areas, so much so that they receive daily requests from mayors, citizens, forces of police and trade associations, of control interventions to protect public safety and of agroforestry and pastoral activities. In the areas contiguous to the Parks, I remind you that hunting is permitted in all forms and on any huntable species, only to hunters residing in the Municipalities in which the territory is concerned (Camogli, Portofino, and Santa Margherita Ligure). A limitation that would make the levy negligible due to the progressive decline in the number of hunters and the reduced hunts and shootings within the contiguous area as well as the complications of the Psa ".
Interventions to be carried out
“The local teams – continues Piana -, by now largely made up of hunters who are not resident in the Municipalities of the Park and the contiguous areas, were forced to operate only in territories outside the contiguous areas without fully guaranteeing the continuity and maximum effectiveness of the interventions . Furthermore, this area does not represent a particular faunal value and does not have a significant hunting interest (there is no presence of hares, no management unit for the selection of roe deer or fallow deer hunting, there are no impositions of permanent fauna such as gray partridges, pheasants or red partridges)".
