La State-Regions Conference has just decided to postpone the plan for the controlled killing of wolves in Italy after the doubts and perplexities advanced by various regions. But there is one who did not accept the choice, also because until the last he kept a favorable position for breeders and therefore to the approval of the plan itself. It is about Tuscany: the Councilor for Agriculture, Marco Remaschi, recalled how well the 40% of sheep, unleashing a "war of numbers" with the WWF.
The same Region has also carried out censuses, according to which they are present in the territory 550 specimens, 108 of which are reproductive, the highest data for the whole country. The environmental association, on the other hand, spoke of different numbers, namely no more than 300 specimens, as would have emerged from its own census, carried out with objective criteria.
However, Remaschi himself stressed that they were necessary two calls to reimburse farmers and that, despite studies of all kinds to ensure prevention, sheep losses have been important and numerous. By the way, with so many wolves and the absence of controlled killing, you risk losing the Pecorino Toscano DOC, an alarm launched by the president of the Consortium, Charles Santarelli, struggling with the continuous closures by the farms.
