New measures
New objectives and new measures for greater efficiency in counteract the presence and settlement of the wild boar: they are the subject of a resolution adopted today by the Provincial Government of Trento on the proposal of the councilor for agriculture. As a new tool, on an experimental basis, the time has been extended, up to 24.00 for the control activities, to allow the controllers to act promptly, taking advantage of the crepuscular habits of the species. Another substantial change concerns state-owned forests, within which, upon agreement between the parties, the authorized controllers in the areas falling within Area A may intervene, and gamekeepers in the areas falling within Area B, always in support and not in place of the staff of the Trentino Forestry Corps.
ASF infections
The wild boar is a huntable species, but in the province of Trento hunting is suspended by the technical prescriptions for the exercise of hunting, and is active the discipline of control (article 31 of the provincial law no. 9 of 1991 December 24). The threat of African swine fever, a viral disease, not transmissible to humans, but highly contagious to domestic and feral pigs, has led to refine techniques and tools to combat the presence and settlement of the wild boar and, consequently, to update the control discipline. The arrival of swine fever in Italy in early 2022 resulted in the need to field even more incisive actions in the free areas, including the province of Trento.
A containment to be improved
Last July the council adopted the provincial plan of urgent interventions for the management and control of the African swine fever. With the measure adopted today, the zoning on the basis of which Trentino is divided into Area A remains in force, where, however, containment must be pursued more drastically than in the past, by the authorized controllers, and in Area B, where the species is absent and, at the first sighting, its entry must be countered quickly and by all means by the security personnel of the Trentino Forestry Corps and the managing body of the hunting. Wildlife Observatory e Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research expressed their positive opinion on the new discipline (Province of Trento).
