The municipality where the removal took place
During the night, the agents of the Trentino Forestry Corps executed the decree signed last Friday by the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento providing for the removal, through culling, of the bear M91. The operation was conducted within the territory of the municipality of Sporminore and is part of the provisions of provincial law 9/2018 for the purpose of "ensuring the protection of public safety and security.
Episodes from a few months ago
The removal was necessary based on the forecasts of the Pacobace (Interregional Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear in the Central-Eastern Alps): in fact, in spring M91 had followed a person for a long time and, during the summer and autumn, had repeatedly entered inhabited centers or in the immediate vicinity of homes. The specimen had been classified as dangerous according to the aforementioned Plan (up to level 16 out of 18).
Wintering phase
The decision was therefore taken to avoid "the possibility of an event of even greater severity than those already recorded". The Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research also expressed a positive opinion on the removal of the specimen - still active as it has not begun the wintering phase (source: Province of Trento).
