The meeting a week ago
Following the meeting held on June 14 with the extraordinary national commissioner of the African swine fever (ASF) Vincenzo Caputo, the regional councilor for the environment Cosimo Latronico wrote a letter to the managers of the natural parks of Basilicata (Regional Park Authority of Gallipoli Cognato and the Small Lucanian Dolomites, Regional Archaeological, Historical, Natural Park Authority of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera, National Park Authority of the Lucano Apennines, Val d'Agri Lagonegrese, Pollino National Park Authority, Vulture Natural Regional Park Authority) to urge the implementation of the actions and measures envisaged by the ordinance of the President of the Basilicata Region n. 5 of 03/06/2023 to prevent the spread of African swine fever in the regional territory.
Who is the letter addressed to?
The letter, also addressed to the presidents of the Provinces of Potenza and Matera, recalls "the provision that even the Parks and Reserves, whose territories do not fall within the areas of concern, put in place actions to intensify the selective control of their competence as well as active monitoring of any carcasses that will be immediately reported and treated in the manner provided for in the ordinance".
A new meeting to organise
Latronico also recalls "the commissioner's powers of receivership in the event of inaction by the competent structures", and while waiting for a meeting that will take place shortly, he asks the Park managers "to want to operate with all urgency as per the ordinance, intensifying the actions of selection and monitoring envisaged" as well as to "provide the competent Parks, Biodiversity and Nature Protection Office with monthly detailed monitoring of the number of animals subject to sampling, as well as the monitoring actions implemented and related results" (source: Basilicata Region).
