Mortgage rates
Guarantee compensation for direct and indirect damage to farms affected by African swine fever and the immediate suspension of mortgage payments. These are the requests put forward by Coldiretti during the second meeting, after the one about a month ago, with the Extraordinary Commissioner for Psa John Filippini, in the presence of the president Ettore Prandini and the secretary general Vincenzo Gesmundo, who underlined how "these compensations are also necessary to not destroy the hopes of the breeders" and must go to reinforce the intervention of the omnibus decree by providing for an increase in resources.
An entire sector in crisis
Over 500 entrepreneurs connected online to express to the Commissioner all their concerns about a situation of "serious crisis for the entire sector". The meeting was set to take stock of an emergency that is putting at risk an entire sector worth over 20 billion euros and the survival of some of the best-known pork butchers of the Made in Italy agri-food sector. Coldiretti has once again called for the immediate payment of compensation for the damage caused by swine fever, with the slaughter of tens of thousands of animals and the restrictions on movement that have effectively paralyzed normal business activity. In addition to the direct ones, linked to the loss of animals, it is also necessary to include the indirect ones, with farms forced to completely stop all activities, including repopulation.
The four macro-actions
Also essential is the suspension of mortgage payments for affected businesses, and with this in mind Coldiretti will write a letter to ABI, the Italian Banking Association, to urge intervention. During the meeting, Commissioner Filippini illustrated the current situation, which sees 29 active outbreaks (20 in Lombardy, 8 in Piedmont and 1 in Emilia Romagna), and the new action plan shared and approved with the European Commission, which includes 4 macro-actions: collection, depopulation of wild boars, surveillance and biosecurity of farms, the subject of a specific ordinance. The objective is to control and confine the virus in the restricted areas. The fact remains that for too long a situation that Coldiretti denounced years ago has been underestimated, allowing the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars, which represent the primary vector for the spread of PSA.
