Adoption of measures necessary to discourage the urbanization of feral pigs, depopulation of wild boars, blanket analysis, strengthening of biosecurity measures, tout court surveillance, signage are the guidelines of the second phase of eradication of African swine fever which involves the possible construction of a second artificial containment barrier parallel to the motorways A26 and A7. The construction of these barriers will start primarily from the areas where positive cases have been found west of the A26 motorway and east of the A7 motorway, with the project subject to changes based on the progress of the epidemiological situation.
“A new phase is opening - declares the vice president of the Liguria Region with responsibility for Agriculture Alessandro Piana-. With the issuance of the ordinance n.1 / 2022 of the Extraordinary Commissioner for African Swine Fever Angelo Ferrari sealed the work done so far by the Liguria Region and the Piedmont Region. In particular, it allows us the complete definition of the biosecurity protocol and the code of conduct to be adopted in the various areas and authorizes in derogation, according to stringent standards that guarantee adequate prophylaxis, the depopulation of wild boars.
All authorized personnel will be taught the essential notions of biosecurity by the territorial veterinary service in collaboration with theRegional Health Authority, upon request of the Wildlife Institutes included in the restricted areas. Basically every activity must be carried out under the supervision and coordination of the competent veterinary service.
The necessary depopulation will continue to be accompanied by the active search for carcasses with sampling and recording of data on a weekly basis in the infected area, giving priority to the outermost areas or where swine fever positive animals have not yet been reported. Monitoring also remains in the buffer area every two weeks. In agreement with Commissioner Ferrari we are pursuing all scientifically useful actions for containment and eradication of the virus, thus allowing the gradual return to normality "(Source REGION OF LIGURIA).
