Hunting for rabbits with the Podenco Canario: According to some it is a dog whose origins date back to more than seven thousand years ago; for sure the Podenco Canario is an excellent track dog, excellent rabbit hunter and reliable friend with innate elegance.
It is a dog with an exceptional elegance, originally from Spain and even better from the Canary Islands. The breed is quite ancient, of a primitive type, and in appearance it closely resembles the representations that the Egyptians made of their dogs 3400 years before Christ. For this reason, some believe that Cirneco dell'Etna, Podenco Ibecenco, Podenco Portuguese and the Kelb tal Fenek all originated from a unique and ancestral stock. Others believe that these dogs have undergone the same biological adaptation to conditions and territory, which has led them to develop in a rather similar way.
What is certain, whatever the truth, is that the Podenco Canario is one of the oldest breed still existing today, characterized by an elegance that makes it a mysterious and elitist dog. It is impossible to forget that the Podenco Canario is not only an elegant dog to showcase, but has good hunting skills, so much so that most of the time it is used during the difficult and demanding rabbit hunt.
What makes him particularly suitable for this kind of hunting performance is his physicality that adapts perfectly to any irregularities of the terrain, his nose which is often described as prodigious, his excellent eyesight and his hearing not bad.
Those who believe that they are exaggerating, it is good to know that thanks to his hearing and his nose the Podenco Canario is able to sense the presence of the wild even in the most difficult places: it finds rabbits in the volcanic gorges, among the thorny bushes, in the crevices of walls or in the bottoms of crevasses. In short, he never loses heart. It is no coincidence that the breed has survived for millennia: it was its hunting skills that probably guaranteed its resistance through the various historical periods, making it not only autonomous, but also precious for the hunter man.
Podenco Canario: Another quality that deserves to be shown is its ability to follow the trail.
During the ensuing he is silent and lethal, an enemy best not to be found in the field. Some prefer to use the Podenco Canario even when hunting with ferrets, a type of hunting well accepted in the Canary Islands. To his ability as a hunter must be added, as mentioned, the great elegance. The Podenco Canario is a medium-sized animal, slender and particularly elongated in lines, light yet surprisingly resistant. Lean and muscular it is a real treat to see this fabulous animal's muscle twitches in action.
Having said that, we just have to test its temperament. Anyone who owns a Podenco Canario says it is a brave and dynamic dog. Despite being imposing, it never appears aggressive, and binds itself in a relationship of trust and submission to its master.
To make it even more exceptional its ability to withstand fatigue and adverse conditions without any complaints.
In short, a red-haired dog, less commonly white that proves not only an excellent hunting dog but also a real four-legged friend.
