Benefits for everyone
Since the beginning of December, a new project has been underway, initiated by the Provincial Councillor for Personnel Magdalena Amhof, based on close collaboration between the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Police Headquarters. Seven unemployed people are completing a three-month internship at the Police Headquarters, where they assist in issuing passports and firearms licenses. "With this measure, we're creating a win-win situation: citizens benefit from shorter waiting times, and at the same time, we're offering unemployed people new opportunities to enter the workforce," emphasizes Councilor Magdalena Amhof.
Shorter waiting times
Since 2024, the Provincial Administration has provided staff to the Police Headquarters to address passport issuance shortages. This has reduced waiting times from seven or eight months to one or two months, and in urgent cases, even to a next-day appointment. However, these short-term solutions did not represent a lasting solution to the staffing shortage. "We want to demonstrate that the Administration and security agencies can work together to find solutions that significantly simplify people's daily lives," explains Amhof. The collaboration with the Police Headquarters is an example of efficient, cross-departmental cooperation.
Security forces
Ulli Mair, Councilor for Security and Violence Prevention, expressed high praise for the initiative, supporting the agreement with the Police Headquarters: "This agreement is part of the measures adopted by the Province in collaboration with the Police Headquarters, with the aim of improving citizen satisfaction with public services and strengthening the work of the security forces. A huge thank you goes to the competent Provincial Councilor, Magdalena Amhof, and Police Commissioner Ferrari. Together, through negotiations and mediation, we launched this important initiative, thus ensuring a significant contribution to streamlining procedures relating to passports and firearms licenses."
The tutor's support
Bolzano Police Commissioner Giuseppe Ferrari, expressing his gratitude to the President of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano for their commitment and to Councilors Amhof and Mair, whose contributions made this important achievement possible, emphasized that the project is part of a fruitful and consolidated collaboration and is confident that the current positive institutional synergy will be maintained. Specifically, the internship at the Police Headquarters is aimed at unemployed individuals registered with a provincial employment agency. Participants will be supported by a tutor. The internship lasts three months with a minimum of 20 hours per week; the monthly salary ranges between €300 and €500 and is funded by the Provincial Administration and with funds from the GOL (Worker Employability Guarantee) program through the PNRR (National Renewable Energy Renewable Energy Network) (source: Province of Bolzano).
