Shotguns: The Remington shotgun, Model 887 Nitro Mag is a high performance shotgun for very demanding hunters who need to shoot in rapid sequence.
When hunting for waterfowl you can choose from a wide range of spearguns. In our columns we have examined many, from the most futuristic to the most classic and traditional. Here, however, we want to present a hunting weapon that embodies tradition and modernity. This is the shotgun and shotgun Remington Nitro Mag 887. This rifle represents the natural evolution of some famous models of the American company, namely the Model 870 Wingmaster shotguns, in turn preceded by the historic Model 10 shotgun.
Remington's hunting rifles, Model 887 Nitro Mag, are, in a sense, the revised and corrected version of the Model 870. In the new series of rifles, the company has not limited itself to producing only one model, namely that of point and in a certain sense the symbol of the new production by Remington, but more models belonging to the Nitro Mag 887 series.
They are: Nitro Mag 887 Bone Collector; 887 Nitro Mag Camo Combo; 887 Nitro Mag Tactical and 887 Nitro Mag Waterfowl. Of course, since the top model is the 887 Nitro Mag, we decided to describe only the characteristics of this gun, characteristics very similar to the models just mentioned, different from the same for additional accessories or for the coloring of the stock and of the cane. The performance of the 887 Nitro Mag shotguns is all very high. The choice of a model, rather than another, will depend exclusively on the type of hunting that will be practiced. In fact, every single 887 Nitro Mag model tries to favor certain types of wild game.
Il Model 887 Nitro Mag Camo Combo can be used for hunting aquatic and other large birds, such as turkey. This weapon considers, in fact, the hunting habits of the Americans, where the turkey is one of the favorite prey. For hunting waterfowl in general and small migratory birds, you can choose between the Model 887 Nitro Mag Waterfowl, specially designed for waterfowl, or the top model 887 Nitro Mag, with an elegant, simple and essential line. The other 887 Nitro Mag models, on the other hand, have a mottled color that makes them very similar to the weapons used by armies. The Remington shotguns are, in fact, widely used by the police forces for their high safety and accuracy. From what has just been said, you will have understood that the Remington Model 887 Nitro Mag shotgun is a safe and precise weapon.
Among the Italian hunters, pump guns are not, however, very widespread. Our hunters prefer semi-automatics, which are considered more practical and faster in loading. In fact, the only flaw with shotguns is in the loading. The technology of these guns uses a manual loading mechanism linked to the aiming rod placed under the barrel. Shotguns are repeating weapons: by sliding the shaft, the weapon is loaded and the cartridge case ejected. This movement lengthens the rearming times compared to semiautomatics and risks losing sight. However, shotguns have the advantage of being safe because, during loading, the safety mechanism is activated that prevents the accidental explosion of shots inside the barrel. The pump technology uses both smooth and rifled barrels.
The Remington Model 887 Nitro Mag, as already mentioned, is a smooth-bore shotgun, ideal for hunting waterfowl.
Its main features are simple and linear design, suitable for use that requires practicality and speed; coating of the weapon in “ArmorLokt Rugged” technology, a polymer that protects the weapon from rust; recoil pad in “Supercell”, a material that reduces recoil by up to 54%; sturdy stock made with shaped and soft panels that facilitate grip and fiber optic front sight with interchangeable light tubes. Other features, always interchangeable chokes and loading rod always covered with shaped panels that facilitate the loading function. The 887 Nitro Mag model is available in 12/89 gauge. This last caliber can be useful for anatidae, when you have to shoot at a long distance, otherwise it is better to use a normal 12 caliber. It is true that the 12/89 caliber looks like a universal shotgun, allowing you to use all the 12 gauge cartridge types.
Furthermore, the Model 887 Nitro Mag by Remington, being smooth-bore, also allows the use of different types of bullets: shot, buckshot and single bullet.
12/89 caliber bullets can weigh as much as 60 grams. These very large cartridges are used to hit long-distance anatids, such as geese, therefore in the case of hunting particular species that are frequently killed in Eastern countries. For all other cases, and in Italian hunting, bullets with a lower weight can be used. Typically, the 12/89 caliber would require at least 40-gram rounds and broken ammunition number three, for the first shot, and zero for the second or third shot. Lower weight ammunition, suitable for 12/76 caliber, would cause uneven shot patterns and scattering of the shot.
In older generation 12/89 caliber rifles, loaded with large ammunition, it has been seen, however, that the recoil action due to the weight of the cartridges is very dangerous because it can devastate the hunter's shoulders. The new generation 12/89 caliber rifles, such as the Model 887 Nitro Mag from Remington, tried to overcome this problem by improving the connection between the combustion chamber and the barrel and softening the recoil sensation of the gun. Other advantages of the Remington 887 Nitro Mag, a slightly lower weight than other shotguns and an affordable price that generally does not exceed 900 euros. The 887 Nitro Mag series rifles are also available in other calibers (12/71 -12/66 -12/47), with prices ranging from 657 to 780 euros.
