La Rizzini® di Marcheno has always been famous for its over and under which it dedicates to hunting and shooting from the platform. Thanks to a visit to the company, we were able to examine and photograph some examples of the current production, thus starting to propose the two EL and EM models of the series Shelve. A sign to underline how the materials are chosen among those with high characteristics such as 18 NiCrMo5 steel for the action obtained by forging and then machined with the tool or, where preferable, by electro-erosion or even on numerical control machines.
The technical system sees the barrels obtained from C42 steel, joined by means of the usual and reliable breech monobloc from which, in addition to the seats for the pipes, the halves, the trunnions, the two rear tenons side by side, the seats for automatic extractors. The action frame encloses the complementary elements, therefore the board represented by the thickness of the sides, the half-pins with the front trapezoidal reinforcements, the raised crosspiece on the bottom and then the mortises for the lower extension of the tenons, the closing block moved by the key and protruding from the bottom of the face. Looking up, you can observe the firing pin holes and the elastic pawl for putting the key back into the center with the gun removed; inside the sides there are cams for primary extraction while on the bottom slide the armament rods of the batteries with the lateral projections for controlling the ejectors. A stable, functional and achievable whole at a fair cost.
The technical system is placed in the right place with a meticulous attention to lines and details: the receiver has been given the rounded shape, which in recent years has become very fashionable with the English name of round body borrowed from the said construction philosophy round action by the Scotsman Dickson, custodian of a very refined mechanism designed precisely to be housed in that special receiver. Following this stylistic orientation, we repeat today very much in vogue, a good aesthetic is achieved only if you carefully pay attention to the relationship between the height of the sides and the thickness of the receiver itself, with particular regard to the curvature of the connection with the back. We add that this choice eliminates a demanding and expensive job such as the execution of the fillets which, however, are not necessarily present in all over-and-under with a traditional line action.
In the achievements of the Rizzini® these attentions are well present and the aesthetic effect is polite and satisfying. We pose the eye on the receiver head where the double cantilever breasts are highlighted by the smooth shells which, starting from the insertion of the rib, extend horizontally under the profile of the table, fading into the connection with the back after having drawn a full arch sixth. This architectural form will be obvious to some: to us it is always the most welcome and satisfying, then accompanied, in this case, with long folders of well-proportioned height and consequent posterior apical curve in right harmony.
Rizzini Regal EL and EM | Other details
In addition to making the barrels swing, the key is an indicator: here it is of the integral pin type with the body adhering to the upper tail of the receiver, well extended and with the round and elongated button to indicate a strong connotation of Italian style. Behind protrudes the slide of the safety in which the firing selector is inserted. The guard with a well-proportioned oval is also of pleasant workmanship and design: in the EM Model it ends with the same length as the bridge while in the EL Model it extends into the hand guard that follows the curvature of the pistol grip with the rounded guard, called Prince of Galles. The single trigger has a surface gilding for embellishment and protection against oxidation.
The grade 3 walnut does not need comments: thanks to the appearance and intrinsic qualities, combined with an adequate work of casing, the shotgun receives a look of considerable prestige to which the embossed engraving work carried out by the company contributes in a beautiful way. Workshop of Cesare Giovanelli. The Renaissance-style leaf motifs are strongly highlighted by the background opacified by a very dense dotting; then we find that the parchment ribbon on which the name of the manufacturer is engraved, placed appropriately in the back of the folder, is a refined choice and consequential to the whole.
