Avoid accidents with ungulates for the safety of road users and for the protection of wildlife. This is the subject of the works that Province of Belluno and Veneto roads they are arguing. In fact, in the last 20 years the investments of ungulates, especially of deer, roe deer and wild boar, on the Belluno roads have increased considerably.. According to the latest available data, every year from 340 to 380 road accidents occur involving deer, roe deer and other wild animals, located in some specific points of the Belluno road network. These include Candaten, Anzù, Busche, Acquabona in particular. The problem, on the other hand, does not concern only this area and in near Trentino an experience - which was not continued - of using sensors was born.
Among the other possible solutions, the one on the table in the Belluno area concerns the so-called wildlife crossings. It is overpasses or underpasses that already exist in many areas of Europe and that Veneto Strade has experienced in a positive way along the Provincial Road 1 of the Sinistra Piave, in the Case Fagherazzi area, at the gates of Levego. This place, however, had been affected for years by the problem of car accidents with ungulates. "Precisely for this reason we had a meeting, Friday morning, with Veneto Streets, to address the problem of road accidents with wildlife - explains the provincial councilor in charge of wildlife management, Franco De Bon - the Province does not think only about the management of the road network, but it is interested in this being green and above all safe. For motorists who find themselves on it, but also for animals.
Let's not forget that the claims are increasing and that recently there was also a fatal accident on the 203 Agordina, precisely due to the crossing of the ungulates ”. The meeting between the Province and Veneto roads has therefore set one common line, consisting in the inclusion in the maintenance plan of the road network of specific projects for the realization of wildlife crossings, according to the most functional methods from time to time. "Within the maintenance works of the road network, it is also necessary to find space for crossings - continues De Bon - Veneto roads is very sensitive to the issue and has already shown great collaboration, also announcing an upcoming intervention in defense of amphibians, frogs and toads, which, especially in spring, cross the roads to reach the lakes ”.
In which points to intervene, however, will be a matter to be discussed in the coming months. In the meantime, a crossing is foreseen by the provincial planning at the height of Marziai, along the provincial road 1 bis Madonna del Piave. “This is an intervention for which we have already identified the financing - underlines the provincial councilor delegated to infrastructure Fabio Luchetta - at the same time we are also trying to work on cutting the vegetation, in order to increase visibility along the roads, in the awareness that the buffer zones currently envisaged are insufficient to guarantee safety conditions, not only with regard to wildlife, but also for the fall of plants ". "This is why we are trying to raise awareness among private individuals who have properties close to the roads, so that they also do not leave mown hay, which risks bringing animals closer to the road - he concludes - in the meantime, Anas is also working on the wildlife corridors. . Our territory needs this attention, to ensure safety and livability"(The Dolomites).
