Having a rifle on test is always a source of considerable fun, if the rifle is the very recent product of the Sabatti curiosity grows and the desire to experiment with several cartridges makes its way. The day in mid-December appears very favorable for the task we have set ourselves and we find ourselves in four alternating on the shooting line with Carlo, who hosts us, Mario, Fabio and the writer.
The valley where the polygon is located has entered for several days at that time of the year when the sun does not appear: it will resume well after mid-January and until then there is no risk of light in the eyes. Likewise the snow, not much, but just enough to create the atmosphere, keeps well and does not melt. Carlo has previously arranged three targets at 100 meters, each with multiple diamonds to arrange, without moving, the number of references necessary for the variety of cartridges to be tested.
The shotgun is ready with the barrel cleaned of protective oil and placed on the bases: several original boxes stacked together with four containers where as many refills with the various MRR bullets are placed. Let's assume that the rifling of this Sabatti is traditional with a pitch of 1:12 ", this too in line with the most adopted value for a general use where medium weight hunting bullets are rewarded. The Sabatti Nuova Rover is immediately appreciated for its light weight: on the other hand, it was precisely in the presentation that this factor was emphasized as pre-eminent for hunters to consider the weapon.
Likewise, everyone is immediately at ease with the Sight Mark Citadel 3-18 × 50 stock and optics that we have removed from the SKL 20 kipplauf of the same manufacturer by placing it now on the rifle: with the use in the single shot we have repeatedly highlighted in the past months the truly optimal performance provided by this rifle scope which now repeats its appreciable performance in the new weapon and optics configuration.
On the firing line
We wanted to try the Sabatti New Rover with what we had at home, therefore ammunition even a little dated, as can be seen from the packaging, another recently acquired and in production in progress, still more with refills using MRR bullets kindly supplied by Sabatti herself. The shot patterns are the result of the four shooters, so there is a slight personal factor: we would say that all this contributes favorably to providing a realistic picture of the performance of this new rifle.
For all tests, the measurement in meters per second at 2 m from the sprint with the Crony chronograph is valid. The bottom square of the targets has the side equal to 2,54 cm or 1 inch.
Barnes VOR-TX TSX BT bullet with polymer tip - weight 168 g - there were only two cartridges left, enough for Carlo to show the extreme precision of this product - V / 2 800 - 793.
EPN flakes olive green box (current) 150 gr expansive plastic tip ball - Fabio enjoyed placing the three shots one inside the other: ammunition with low cost and excellent yield that we are not going to comment on - V / 2 800 - 785 - 804
Sellier & Bellot Match HPBT 168 gr - rather open grouping that we are not exhibiting - V / 2 761 - 749 - 763
Extrema Rifle Hunting Flakes 180 gr SST bullet with polymer tip - V / 2 766 - 757 - 762
Flakes Exacta Rifle Match Sierra Match King 180g ball - only two hits, but significant - V / 2 743 - 723
Sellier & Bellot Soft Point Round Nose 180 gr - wide grouping - V / 2 775 - 753 - 761 - ammunition obviously not appreciated by the barrel
RECHARGES
MRR Green Long Range 160 gr - V / 2 806 - 797 - 802 - 808 - 807 - photo 1362 - appreciable result
MRR Green Hunting 152 gr - polymer tip - V / 2 797 - 804 - 801 - 800 - again appreciable result
MRR Long Range 160 gr - V / 2 766 - 780 - 781 - 782 - 771 - photo 1391 - the charge can be improved for greater concentration
MRR Green Sport 158 gr - V / 2 731 - 732 - 732 - despite the constant speed, the recharge is not optimal in terms of dispersion
Conclusions
The conclusions leave the discussions open: the traditional rifling adopted in this shotgun masters the classic bullets with medium weight for the .308 Win cartridge well. therefore around 150 gr, even if the two pairs of shots obtained with the 180 gr Exacta Rifle Match Fiocchi or with the 168 gr Barnes TSX BT provide to undermine this certainty.
Certainly the components and the accuracy adopted in the preparation of these cartridges make a premium on other factors and rightly reverberate on the price. For hunting, the elective destination of the New Rover, some solutions among those indicated are ready while many others can be experimented by finding those of greatest satisfaction.
