Migratory phenology
Federcaccia, through the Studies and Research Office, continued this year the research in collaboration with the University of Milan on the migratory phenology of song thrushes wintering in Italy. The areas where the thrushes were captured and marked were Sardinia, like last year, and the Marches; the operations at both sites took place in December 2022. During the month of March, we obtained the first data on the start of migration, which took place in a north-eastern direction, for three subjects. The thrush called Sirio, wintering in the Conero Park area (Ancona), remained in the wintering area until 9 March, then on the 18th it sent a signal from Croatia. The departure therefore took place in this time interval 9-18 March.
Wintering areas
The thrush called Irgoli gave signals in its wintering area in Sardinia in the province of Nuoro until February 20, then the signals were interrupted until March 22, when the thrush sent a signal from Hungary. Also in this case it is confirmed that the migration did not take place before 20 February. The Shedir thrush, also marked in Sardinia in the province of Nuoro, did not give signals for a long time, but on 16 March it sent presence data in the wintering area, while on 30 March it signaled its presence in Serbia.
Comparison with past data
These data are added to those obtained last year, and to those obtained from the Puglia Region, which has been carrying out the same research for two years with its Faunistic Observatory. Federcaccia continues to monitor the migration using the most reliable methodology to accurately know the movements of this species during the winter and spring (source: FIDC).
