Savage Mod.11 Scout: At the Bignami Day last March it was possible to observe a new model of the Savage called Scout equipped with some functional characteristics for the port and for use in difficult conditions and where the promptness of shooting at short distance is essential.
di Emmanuel Tabasso
By securing the distribution in Italy of the American Savage, Bignami di Ora has created a probable conquest of market spaces of good size and the prerogative of connoisseurs of the technique and of the value of the money. The solutions devised in the 50s by Nicholas Brewer are still valid and allow the production, at decidedly competitive costs, of shotguns in which robustness, functionality and precision go hand in hand. The most recent model presented is called Scout and from the first impact it shows particular characteristics for a specific use as the name already indicates. It is the shotgun for use without too many regards, designed for use in difficult terrain and situations, where readiness and ability to fire, maneuverability, recoil reduction and metal sights are the basis of the solutions adopted.
Castle, shutter and barrel
The production of the House provides two action sizes, Long and Short, to conveniently arrange the two series of cartridges that in the United States refer to the .30-06 Sprg. and al .308 Win. so that this model, chambered only for the latter cartridge, will have the short type associated with less weight, albeit not many grams, and greater rigidity.
The structure starts from a milled alloy steel cylinder: the ring and bridge dimensions are slightly increased compared to the standard, with the right side higher than the usual comparison brought by the mechanics of the K 98 so as to offer greater strength and a larger surface. for the sliding of the shutter; the ejection window is wide in this model while the magazine insertion slot is narrowed thanks to the two-wire structure, but with a unique presentation of the cartridge. The shutter is composed of the base cylinder on which a first pair of fins is inserted at the front separated by a shim washer, on this the second pair of fins is engaged by means of a support pin on which a round crossbar inserted in the cylinder works with a game of joints which is also supported by the shaping of the firing pin. The rear wings are fixed and act as sliding guides while the head with the advanced pair of rotating wings closes in the mortises obtained in the ring: you can see the lowered face supporting the cartridge bottom, the firing pin hole, the elastic pawl ejector and the extractor claw recessed orthogonally in the right flap and registered by a wire spring with a thrust ball. The rear part is also unusual and rational: you can see a tube keyed on the cylinder with a round button that acts as a cocking knuckle, the handlebar with a rounded base and a shaped insert that occludes the space between the base itself and the apical profile of the bridge, the shank of the firing pin that protrudes from the base, giving warning of armed mechanics. The codetta of the castle is a separate piece on which the button of the two-position safety is mounted: it locks the trigger and the firing pin, leaving the handlebar free to extract the chambered cartridge with ease. Lastly, you can see the bolt release slider located in the front prong of the guard.
The barrel and the details
The hammered barrel turns out to be of very limited size with its 51 cm (20 "), favoring weight and above all handling even if a little to the detriment of the speed performance which, in this type of shotgun, are certainly not at the peak of desires. of the user. A sturdy muzzle brake / flash hider is mounted on the muzzle and a little rearward, fitted on the barrel, we find the tubular base of the prism viewfinder equipped with two large protective fins. The barrel barrel fixing is another peculiarity of the Savage: the barrel has a long thread in the breech that partly serves to join with the ring by adjusting the head space, then the shaped plate is inserted which acts as a force discharge prism , finally a round nut is screwed onto the remaining part of the thread which tightens the whole assembly. The rear sight is replaced by a valuable diopter of small size, accurate workmanship and adjustments in both directions: mounted on a dovetail base screwed to the bridge, it allows quick shots with good aim. However, the Picatinny type slide is not missing for any other solutions with optics. The trigger is of the adjustable Accutrigger ™ type and with a lamina inserted in the trigger that acts as a safety device preventing the trigger from retracting if it is not fully pressed: in this way it is possible to maintain effective release at reduced weights without running risks. The detachable magazine is made of thick drawn and painted sheet metal and then encased in a polymer support base: it contains 10 cartridges in two rows, but with a unique presentation.
The kick and the conclusions
The single-piece stock in sand-colored synthetic material is obtained by molding, including the deep knurling at the grip points. The straight line allows very quick aiming of the target and the cheek rest, adjustable in six positions, allows to optimize the posture of the eye. Comfortable the arched pistol that is well suited to hands of various sizes and practical reveals the thick soft rubber butt plate to dampen the recoil and act as a support on the ground. An unconventional shotgun, specific for wide-ranging uses and not only for our usual hunting or post-hunting selection: a decidedly functional ready-to-use for example for recoveries where the sum of quality will be able to appear well in every occasion.
