To the initiative in defense of the foxes found in the former landfill in Via Bressan a Selvazzano (province of Padua) the local section of theENPA (National Animal Protection Body) and Legal Intervention Group. Tomorrow, Saturday 23 January, and also that of 30 January were chosen to form a garrison for the protection of animals and prevent hunting, with the appointment scheduled from 13 to 16 at the Sanitary Kennel. What exactly happened?
The two days are the result of the collection of signatures to which 565 citizens of the Veneto municipality signed up, intending to protect the foxes from hunters. The mayor Enoch Soranzo was also urged to issue an ordinance as soon as possible to set a ban on hunting. within the area of the old landfill. ENPA Padua underlined how the mayor and Giorgio Zoppello, municipal councilor with responsibility for the environment, have not yet responded, a different behavior from that held in the course of a petition for the killing of some domestic pines.
The association also recalled how the defense of foxes is not limited only to this subscription. In fact, the citizens who joined have requested the guarantee of a daily protection for the safety of the animals. In this case, however, we have been talking for several months now. In March of last year, the request to fence off the municipal property area of the former landfill was rejected: in practice it was thought of a bottom closed by a wall or a metal mesh to avoid hunting and poaching phenomena denounced by animal rights associations.
Foxes and wildlife have found refuge in this area which over time has reforested with the spontaneous formation of vegetation: for this reason, also taking into account the fact that the matter is the responsibility of the Province, the enclosure was not considered necessary for the light of the law currently in force. According to the hunting calendar of the Veneto Region (2015-2016) the fox is one of the species that can be hunted from last September 20th to January 31st.
Animals can be hunted by hunters and by the Provincial Police within the so-called Restocking and Capture Area. The Province of Padua has also established that burrowing is the most effective method for the conservation of the fauna, as the fox hunts small game of hunting interest more assiduously when it needs to feed its offspring. Finally, every three years, fox and small sedentary game are monitored (hares and pheasants in the first place).
