cci The councilor of the Veneto region Sergio Berlato has decided to respond to another adviser, Andrea Zanoni (Democratic Party), regarding his statements on the danger of hunting. According to Zanoni, in fact, hunting would be the most dangerous activity of all, therefore “it should be abolished from the face of the Earth”. While respecting the opinion, Berlato has published a note to reiterate how the facts and objective data show that hunting remains one of the least dangerous activities, despite being practiced with sporting weapons.
As reported by some media outlets, hunting activity has registered on average about twenty fatal accidents per season, while in Italy there are 25 deaths a year from traumatic causes. The latest Istat data, relating to 2009, spoke of 24642 deaths for this type of reason, therefore hunting would have an impact of just 0,0012%. This means that there is one hunting accident every 1200.
Berlato pointed out how hunting is at least ten times less dangerous than the average of other human activities. For example, deaths in the home are 8 thousand a year, without forgetting the almost 4 thousand for road accidents and almost 1200 for work reasons. Even fishing is more dangerous, as the incidence is equal to 129 people per 100 thousand, which means that being a fisherman is over 40 times more risky than being a hunter.
