The carcass of the young she-wolf was found on 28 December 2019 in the woods on the heights of Ornavasso, at the entrance to the Valdossola in Piedmont, killed by a large wound on the belly. It was a specimen of a protected species, whose death had been the subject of examination by veterinary specialists of the University of Turin, and the discovery of which had started the investigations of the carabinieri of the parks grouping, who had led up to two hunters: a 61-year-old man from Albese con Cassano, and a 62-year-old man from Sumirago, province of Varese.
The suspicions about them - reinforced by the results of the autopsy which had established a gunshot as the cause of the animal's death - stemmed from the presence of the respective cars in that area on the day of the discovery, and from the use of an electronic card, with which they had opened the barrier that allows access to that area. The two had thus been entered in the register of suspects, underwent a search that had given a negative result, and an extension of investigations that had lasted until July last year, when the Deputy Prosecutor of Verbania he had served them the notice of conclusion of the investigation which accused them of killing animals.
The XNUMX-year-old from Albese, assisted by the lawyer Davide Brambilla, filed a defensive memory which underlined the total absence of real elements against him. The date of the wolf's death was not certain, and the state of decomposition suggested that it predates the discovery. Furthermore, as the investigating judge also pointed out in accepting the request for filing, in those days 70 cars and an immeasurable number of people on foot who entered the area and therefore they could have killed the animal. Too many to be able to attribute responsibility to the two suspects, who in the defense briefs provided a "concordant, detailed and precise reconstruction of their movements, such as to make their version completely credible". Decisive to push the investigating judge to accept their request for filing (The day).
