The state of the population
The Sicilian Region has concluded the monitoring of the wild rabbit on the territory and has put forward a proposal for collection. The current state of the population in this territory has improved compared to previous years, even if the distribution remains uneven. Considering the ecological and socio-economic importance of the species, two management paths are proposed, one for the smaller islands and one for the larger island.
smaller islands
Here the wild rabbit does not have great ecological relevance and its presence may even be undesirable in some contexts. Therefore, no particular limitations or management interventions are foreseen for this species, maintaining a sustainable hunting harvest without additional restrictions, as in previous years.
Largest island
The wild rabbit is of considerable importance and with the fourth year of monitoring a differentiated sampling for ATC is proposed. The sampling is based on:
Rabbit density estimate for TAC in 2024, obtained from fecal pellets
The surface area of each ATC intended for hunting, as reported in the 2013-2018 hunting and wildlife plan
The average number of hunters who collected their hunting license between 2018 and 2023
