The presence of a reproductive nucleus of golden jackal was found in the Parma area, immediately south of the Po river. The secretariat of the Oglio Sud Park consequently sent a communication to the hunters of theViadanese territorial area, asking the associates to spread the word as much as possible: the request is not to shoot (the jackal could be mistaken for a fox), but rather to promptly report any sighting, useful for mapping its expansion. In short, experts expect that, in a short time, the jackal can also land on the Mantuan banks of the Po.
The Park is available to organize training courses on the subject for those interested. In early December 2020, a jackal specimen had been taken from a night camera trap in a parking lot near Parma. In the night between 8 and 9 last January, some experts (universities of Parma and Udine, Carabinieri forestali) held a bioacoustic stimulation session in the Bassa: a sound emission was released, which was answered by the howls of at least two- three individuals. The operation consequently confirmed the presence of a real reproductive nucleus, and not some scattered solitary specimen. To give the news, on their social channels, were the Parks of the Duchy.
That the plain and the Po Valley environment are changing is confirmed by more and more clues. Last summer, in the countryside between Dosolo and Viadana, for example a wolf had been photographed; and censuses carried out in the Oglio Sud Park area revealed the presence of foxes, roe deer, porcupines and badgers, as well as volatile species such as herons, mallards, cormorants and ibises. The debate on the causes is open: the fault of climate change or the merit of a more welcoming environment and correct wildlife management? Among the beneficial side effects is the fact that wolves and jackals, predatory animals, will eat a good number of the nutria weeds.. On the other hand, the proliferation of wild boars appears dangerous, which in the Oglio-Po area have already caused several accidents by suddenly crossing the roads just as cars pass by.
