SWAROVSKI dS 5 - It was inevitable. Digital technology enters the field of aiming optics that we use on the hunt. The (few) hunters nostalgic and opposed to the digital world can sleep peacefully: the internal display of the new Swarovski dS 5, after having independently processed all relevant parameters (atmospheric pressure, temperature, angle, wind, magnification, personal ballistic data etc. ) shows in a moment the precise point of aim, certainly even better and faster than our mind. So why not? Considering - as I will never tire of repeating - the needs of the selection and of the assigned item, it is better to exploit the “devilry” of digital technology. It would be absurd and anachronistic not to do it. However, what surprised us most is the ease of use of this innovative tool. Even those who are not super-expert in computer science are able to exploit its great potential. Just a click. Going into more detail, the Swarovski Optik dS 5 measures travel time, distance (from 30 to 1.375 m) and point-of-aim correction with progressive display; the telescope also carries out the integrated recognition of the magnification (ie the correct point of aim is calculated in relation to the set magnification).
The dS 5 App, of course, is available for smartphones and tablets (Android and Ios), with a Bluetooth interface. The configuration (to be done safely at the beginning of the hunt, or at home) is based on: personal ballistic data, unit of measurement, size and duration of the aiming point, distance display, wind speed, display (in joules) of the energy impact, etc. All in the language set on the smartphone. The modification of the magnification (from 5 to 25x) is obtained simply by turning the special adjustment ring 180 °. The focus includes the compensation of personal diopters and produces an optimal sharpness of the reticle: when the latter appears with great sharpness, the display will also offer the same sharpness. With the parallax turret (range from 50m to infinity) you can adjust the optimum sharpness at any aiming distance, avoiding the risk of aiming errors due to parallax. Regarding the reticle, it will be very appreciated that it is placed on the second plane of the image: this means that - by changing the magnification - the reticle keeps the same dimensions, while obviously the subject appears larger. We have verified that even at 25x the framed subject is minimally covered by the reticle. Excellent, in a word, the search for the vital point of the framed subject, as the lovers of the "single shot" like.
The list price of the innovative Swarovski dS 5-25x52P stands at € 3.960 and will be available at retailers from July 2017.
