Restriction areas
“The regional strategy of Basilicata for the containment of African Swine Fever is implemented and strengthened through the approval of two governance instruments which, on the basis of the national indications issued by the Extraordinary Commissioner for ASF, Vincenzo Caputo, further regulate the actions to be implemented both in the areas of restriction I and II of the province of Potenza, and in the regional territory free from ASF contamination". The news was announced by the vice-president and councilor for health and personal policies of the Basilicata region, Francesco Fanelli, following the approval of a resolution by the regional council.
Strategic actions
“In particular – explained councilor Fanelli – following the sharing of the provision with the competent offices of the Campania Region, so that a common intervention strategy was developed, modulated according to the particularities of each individual territory, we approved the Regional Eradication Plan drawn up pursuant to the 'Extraordinary Plan for capture, killing and disposal of wild boars (sus scrofa)' which provides for the adoption of 6 strategic actions:
- Active search of carcasses and epidemiological monitoring to verify the distribution and progress of the ASF epidemic.
- Depopulation of wild boar species through capture and killing.
- Application of biosecurity measures in pig farms.
- Installation of physical barriers that delimit the infected area and limit the movement of potentially infected animals.
- Correct waste management aimed at preventing feral pigs from finding sources of livelihood near urban centers and pig farms.
- Alternative methods of containment of the species.
Avoid the spread of ASF
“The contextual approval of the PRIU (Regional Urgent Interventions Plan) relating to the year 2024 – added the councilor – allows the interventions to be implemented in the remaining regional territory to be considered free from PSA, in order to prevent the infection from penetrating and spreads throughout the regional territory and so that it can be identified early and, in the event of its introduction, all the necessary measures can be prepared to limit its spread and prepare the interventions to be implemented. Even in this phase, a synergistic and multidisciplinary approach remains of fundamental importance - concluded councilor Fanelli - between all the actors involved and the territorial operational groups to continue long-term planning work in a coordinated manner also with agricultural policies, food and forestry and with the environment, territory and energy so that the spread of the virus can be countered and the restrictive measures have as little impact as possible on the entire production chain, on commercial activities linked to tourism and rural development; sectors of vital importance for our region".
