A spreading emergency
The new outbreaks of African swine fever are an alarming sign of how the situation has reached emergency levels and is spreading rapidly and dangerously. This is what Coldiretti, on new cases of PSA that are affecting Lombardy and Piedmont, particularly in the provinces of Lodi, Pavia, Vercelli and Novara. The first step to take is to pay the compensation due to companies damaged by Psa that are now in great difficulty. According to Coldiretti, four urgent interventions are necessary: compensation to sow farms even in the event of company closure; compensation to fattening breeders for lost income; constant monitoring of pig prices paid to breeders to avoid speculation; stop to loans and contributions for affected companies.
The role of the new commissioner
These are the first urgent actions that can support, in this emergency phase, a supply chain like the Italian pig industry, which is one of the best performing in the entire national agri-food system with a value between production and related activities of around 20 billion euros, one hundred thousand jobs and 10 million animals raised that represent the basic product for the supply chain of the great Italian PDO hams (Parma San Daniele but not only) and also of the other 20 typical PDO cured meats. Now it is essential, Coldiretti underlines, that the new Special Commissioner implements every measure, even drastic ones, to prevent PSA from spreading to the neighboring provinces that represent half of the national pig herd.
Constant surveillance
Coldiretti's constant commitment to supporting the affected farmers and all those in the affected areas continues, who must have, in the face of a crisis of this size, all the necessary institutional attention. As Coldiretti, we will monitor and react alongside our pig farming members so that the necessary interventions do not remain a dead letter, but that we proceed as quickly as possible to cover the lost income (source: Coldiretti).
