The activation of the supply chain
“A specific contribution is expected for wild boar control and management activities in the four pig districts identified by the Veneto region: Upper Veronese, Lower Veronese, Euganean Hills-Lower Vicentino, central Veneto". This is one of the proposals that Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Veneto illustrated on the occasion of a meeting, which was held in recent days in Venice, between professional organizations and hunting associations in order to avoid the advent of African swine fever in Veneto (wild boars represent the main vector of transmission of the virus). The second is the activation of a marketing chain for the captured animals. Several outbreaks have been confirmed between Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
An adequate contribution
“We must not be unprepared if it arrives in our Region - underlines Cia Veneto -. At this moment we are called to carry out an ad hoc containment program for ungulates, also through an adequate contribution to all control activities". That is, the DGR of 14 June 2022 called the Regional Plan of urgent interventions for the management, control and eradication of Psa in farmed pigs and free-living wild boars must be fully implemented".
The figure of the bioregulator
“We welcome in a positive manner - comments the director of Cia Veneto, Maurizio Antonini - the appointment of Oscar Da Rold as the new regional coordinator to implement urgent interventions to contain wild boars”. Not only that. The Regional Council approved a further resolution, number 857 of 16 July 2024, which indicates further operational lines. Among these, the establishment of the figure of the 'bioregulator', i.e. a selector responsible for supervising carcass management operations according to the rules of maximum safety.
The presence of wild boars
“It is also necessary to facilitate and speed up intervention times - adds the director -. When reports arrive in terms of the presence of wild boars in a certain area, action must be taken immediately." As regards the selectors themselves, the latest DGR provides "priority for the owners or managers of agricultural land with respect to training and the issuing of relevant qualifications. All actions that go in the direction of safeguarding the Venetian pig sector must be adopted without ifs or buts".
The value of the sector
Today, in Veneto, the sector is worth over 90 million euros per year, for a total of 1.522 professional farms and 681.763 animals (Veneto Agricoltura data). The most suitable provinces are those of Verona (43%), Treviso (18%) and Padua (15%). In the event of the advent of the PSA, Cia Veneto expects losses of over 10% of the overall turnover, or at least 10 million euros in twelve months. “And this is a downward estimate -concludes Antonini-. The entire Prosciutto Veneto PDO supply chain would be in serious crisis, with more than negative impacts on the economic-social fabric. This is why the virus must be fought now by every means, even though there is no emergency at a regional level" (source: CIA).
