Prevention plans
The Dolomiti Local Health Authority and the Province of Belluno have signed a collaboration agreement for urgent interventions to eradicate African swine fever . The law requires all slaughtered large wild game animals to be delivered to designated collection centers established by the Reserves, where biometric data can be collected and the Provincial Police Service can conduct due diligence. Trichinoscopic testing is mandatory for all wild boars killed during hunting, including those intended for personal consumption, to prevent the possible occurrence of human trichinellosis (a foodborne zoonosis). Approximately 6-700 wild boars are slaughtered annually in the province of Belluno.
Twelve months
The object of the agreement between the Province and the Ulss Dolomiti concerns the coverage of the costs of the veterinary inspection of hunted wild boars for the benefit of hunters authorized to hunt and provides for an investment by the Province of 10 thousand euros for 12 months. This initiative aims to reduce the size of the wild boar population, with the dual purpose of limiting the damage caused by this invasive species to crops and wild environments, as well as preventing the possible extension to the provincial territory of the front of the African swine fever epidemic present in neighboring regions.
The commitments
In particular, the ULSS n. 1 Company undertakes to:
– arrange for the collection of muscle samples (usually the diaphragm) from the slaughtered animals and for the collection of the samples, upon request by the operators, hunters or hunting reserves;
– send the collected samples to the IZSVe for analysis;
– manage analytical results, reporting any positives
The Province of Belluno, through the Provincial Police Corps and the Hunting and Fishing Offices, has the task of:
– to make the eradication and surveillance measures for African Swine Fever (ASF) provided for by national and regional plans effectively operational;
– to coordinate the actions of the members of the Alpine Hunting Reserves foreseen by the national and regional plans for African Swine Fever (ASF);
– to promptly report to the Veneto Region the results of the application of the above-mentioned plans.
