Devastating economic consequences
African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease of pigs and wild boars. It is a highly lethal disease for domestic pigs, but completely harmless to humans. There are no vaccines or treatments and the high capacity of the disease to spread has devastating economic consequences for the pig sector. The Ministry of Health, with the Ordinance of 2 October 2024, has updated the eradication and surveillance measures for African swine fever (ASF). The Friuli Venezia Giulia The territory is still not affected by the disease, but the epidemiological situation is under close observation due to the increase in the number of outbreaks in domestic settings in the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
Campaign 2024-2025
The FVG Region, in order to preserve the health status and protect the regional livestock heritage, has deemed it appropriate to confirm also for the 2024/2025 campaign the risk mitigation measures regarding slaughter for self-consumption at the private home of the citizen according to the terms described in the communication below:
…as a precaution, the slaughter of pigs for private domestic consumption is not permitted at commercial fattening pig breeding establishments and sold directly on site to private individuals who request them for private domestic consumption.
Infection to reduce
Unless otherwise indicated, at present only the slaughter of pigs by private individuals at home for their own consumption is permitted, provided that the correct disposal of slaughter by-products is guaranteed, in compliance with current European, national and municipal legislation. It is necessary to minimize the further spread of the infection in the domestic sector and the involvement of other farms - the regional note underlines - effectively counteract the passage of the virus from wild to domestic animals through the scrupulous application and strict controls on biosecurity, including training and awareness-raising activities.
Private domestic consumption
With a note dated 14 October 2024, the Western Friuli Health Authority, in relation to the 2024-25 home pig slaughter campaign for private domestic consumption, recalls in particular that:
the obligation remains for private individuals who intend to slaughter at home to notify the Competent Authority of the place and date of slaughter in order to allow monitoring of the health status of the pigs raised, with particular reference to infestation by parasites of the Trichinella spp genus, responsible for zoonoses linked to the consumption of uncooked meat products;
Breeders and private individuals who wish to slaughter at their home for subsequent domestic consumption are required to dispose of the remains of the slaughter (so-called Animal By-Products) using the services of companies authorised for this purpose. The preservation of delivery documents (e.g. transport document) is essential to demonstrate to the authorities responsible for control the correct management of the by-products (source: Municipality of Pordenone).
