Counter strategy
The Lombardy Region has organized today an extraordinary meeting with the Commissioner for Swine Fever, Giovanni Filippini, and representatives of agricultural organizations, prefectures and provinces, to share the most important aspects of the strategy to combat ASF provided for by the new ordinance of the commissioner. The meeting was coordinated by the Councilor for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Alessandro Beduschi. “The strategy implemented by Commissioner Filippini – declared Councillor Beduschi – contains carefully studied measures, which have formally received the approval of the European Commission and serves to implement concrete actions, but it must be clearly stated that we will have to wait at least two weeks to see the first results”.
The absolute priority
“PSA – Beduschi recalls – is a national emergency and we are aware of the sacrifices that breeders are facing. However, the absolute priority at this time is to build a wall against the virus. In the new strategy, the main objective is to establish precisely where and how to stop it”. In this regard, it was announced that within a week work will begin to close all the motorway gates opened in the affected areas, using the motorways as 'natural' barriers.
No to improvisation or selfishness
In addition to this measure of cordoning off the roads, the depopulation of wild boars will be intensified thanks to the intervention of the provincial police and the army, to create real buffer zones. "To face this crisis - concludes Beduschi - coordinated interventions and a great collective effort are needed. There is no room for improvisation or selfishness, we must work as a team. Furthermore, it is time to put aside the tones of hunting for the guilty that certain politicians are riding in an instrumental way, also with the spread of real fake news. What is needed now is a sense of responsibility". (Source LNews)
