The situation after 2022
We report below the press release from Alessio Abbinante, president of theANNUMmigrators of Piedmont: “Over the past three years, we have been through a journey full of challenges. After the first phase of total suspension of hunting in the province of Alessandria, starting in January 2022, we finally arrived at a structured strategy: in Zone 2, we had opted for the containment of wild boars also through round-ups, while in Zone 1, direct hunting of wild boars had been allowed. Furthermore, to further increase protection, we were studying a free zone around these two areas”.
The new ordinance
“I had dedicated the entire month of August to this project, also thanks to the four-month extension of the wild boar hunting season introduced by the legislator. A dramatic turn of events, a new ordinance and everything changes:
– In Zone 1, no wild boar hunting (except for exemptions) and containment with a dog
– In Zone 2, interpretative doubts and new modules (which are never lacking)
– A new CEV Zone where, as of today, everything is at a standstill.
The Piedmont Region, with the Councilor for Hunting Paolo Bongioanni – whom we thank – immediately took action to obtain exemptions in Zone 1, receiving a negative response. In the meantime, in training, a nice pack of about ten wild boars was running freely a few dozen meters from a pig farm in the Alessandria area. Episode immediately reported by the undersigned”.
Risks without hunting
"In the meantime, cases of ASF appear on farms tens of kilometers away from the infected areas. In the meantime, in a single breeding season without hunting and containment, the number of wild boars will increase exponentially, risking compromising all the efforts made to date. Well, unless we hypothesize a new species - namely the flying wild boar - perhaps it is time to consider other reconstructions on the spread of the virus in these farms. The fault lies neither with hunting nor with containment. Faced with this uncertainty that will bring not only the hunting world but the entire primary sector to its knees, the time has come for a protest by the entire rural world".
