Regional ordinance
Following the outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) which occurred in some areas of Campania, and in particular in Serre and Montesano sulla Marcellana, the European Commission intended to include in the infected area also the closest Lucanian municipalities of Grumento Nova, Lagonegro, Moliterno, Paterno and Tramutola. As a result, an order will soon be issued by the President of the Basilicata Region, Vito Bardi, to regulate the conduct to be followed in the five Municipalities concerned and in the remaining territories of the region.
Wild boar carcasses
In the infected area, the movement of pigs will be inhibited and the research and control of wild boar carcasses will be strengthened. The control activities of pig farms will also be intensified by veterinarians. In the remaining territories, free movement of pigs will be possible with a veterinary visa. Research activities for wild boar carcasses will also be intensified throughout the region, as envisaged by the regional plan of urgent interventions for the fight against ASF, a document shared by the Directorates General for Health, Environment and Agriculture of the Region, approved by the Regional Council July of 2022.
The numbers of the emergency
With this provision, the regional operational nucleus for the fight against swine fever was also established. As part of these activities, from January 2022 to today, around 500 carcasses of wild boars that died in road accidents and around 100 pigs that died on farms have been examined in Basilicata, and checks have been carried out on farms, all with negative results (source: Basilicata region).
