Urgent measures
La Basilicata region, through presidential ordinance 9/2023, in compliance and application of commissioner ordinance 5/2023, the process of developing and applying new measures useful for monitoring and containing the spread of African swine fever in Basilicata is continuing, also known as Psa. Among the urgent measures implemented by the Health Department, through managerial determination, there are those aimed at organizing the collection and destruction of wild boar carcasses found during passive surveillance (Zone II and I), of carcasses belonging to wild boars killed in the Zones of restriction II and I conferred by hunters, selection controllers, bioregulators if not subjected to heat treatment as well as of the viscera of wild boars used for self-consumption, limited to Zone I. Therefore, in the 29 Lucanian municipalities identified (EU Reg. 2023/1799), the costs relating to the carcass destruction procedures will be completely supported by the Basilicata Region which, for this purpose, has provided for a specific transfer of resources amounting to 250.000 euros to the Potenza Health Authority.
Wild boar carcasses
To intervene incisively and broaden the range of subjects who can participate in the ASF monitoring actions in Basilicata, an economic contribution is planned for research into wild boar carcasses in the area. “Through the presidential ordinance – declared the vice president and the councilor for Health and Personal Policies, Francesco Fanelli – we intervene to bring the number of wild animals back within the sustainability limits indicated by the depopulation plan drawn up by the Extraordinary Commissioner for the Psa , acting directly on the causes of the transmission of the infection. The monitoring activity of the carcasses of wild boars hit in Basilicata has not currently detected cases of positivity to African swine fever. The multidisciplinary work implemented through the governance tools that we have implemented and established - continued the councilor - has the aim of eradicating the PSA virus and impacting the measures implemented as little as possible on commercial activities linked to tourism, to rural development and the entire production chain of the sector.
Depopulation interventions
As part of the regional strategy to combat ASF, it is necessary to continue to work in complete synergy and give homogeneous intervention indications throughout the Lucanian territory to proceed safely and with maximum effectiveness. From this perspective, with the legislative decree n. 667/2023, we have established the Provincial Territorial Operational Groups which have the task of coordinating in the territory the interventions aimed at depopulation, the training of operators, the recruitment of staff, the biosecurity of farms, the management of the impacts created by the species and the creation of structures for the meat supply chain" (source: Basilicata Region).
