The measures to be taken
Strengthening of controls, other collection and examination points of carcasses, new training courses for bioregulators. The fight against the spread of the disease will mainly depend on these measures African swine fever in Reggio Emilia. This was established by the working group that met in Reggio Calabria, with the coordination of the extraordinary commissioner of the PSA, Vincenzo Caputo, in the presence of the regional councilor for Agriculture, Gianluca Gallo, and the deputy Francesc,o Cannizzaro. Also present, among others, were the director of the Region's Agriculture Department, Giacomo Giovinazzo; Giorgio Piraino, manager of the veterinary sector and delegate of the sub-commissioner for health, Iole Fantozzi; the manager of the agriculture sector for the province of Reggio Calabria, Domenico Ferrara; the head of the veterinary sector of the Asp Reggina, Francesco Nirta; the president of the Aspromonte Park Authority, Leo Autelitano. Also with them were the representatives of the Metropolitan City, Prefecture, ASP, ATC Reggio Calabria, Carabinieri Forestali, Nas.
The results obtained so far
The meeting served to take stock of the situation and plan further initiatives to be implemented to stem the spread of the disease which affects pigs and wild boars and whose last confirmed case dates back to last July in the Reggio area. In positively evaluating the results of the work carried out so far by the regional structure created to combat the spread of the disease, expressing particular appreciation for the choice to also invest in training courses for bioregulators (3.000 qualified in the past few weeks, at the end of specific training courses ), Commissioner Caputo has ensured full availability to support the initiatives implemented by the Region, in concert with the other institutional subjects involved. Hence the decisions taken: we will immediately proceed with the activation of the territorial operational group, already established, led by the manager Piraino, with the task of implementing and monitoring the necessary actions, which will be analytically listed in an extraordinary intervention plan within which , as mutually agreed, specific activities will find space.
Among these, for example, the supply of special cages for catching wild boars; the implementation of the number of hygiene and carcass collection points, to be subjected to veterinary control; the planning of other training courses on biosecurity, with the Region's commitment to promoting the multiplication of training and information meetings dedicated primarily to hunter-bioregulators, whose precious and essential role, not only in the areas with greater restrictions, is destined to acquire ever greater importance in the context of the disease eradication plan, the implementation of which will essentially be delegated to the hunter-bioregulators themselves. Furthermore, mushroom pickers and woodland visitors were also involved, to arrive at the definition of a widespread surveillance network for the phenomenon. The objective is single: to stop the advance of PSA in the red areas, until it is eradicated. Achievement in view of which we will also proceed - to protect farmers - with the adoption of measures that will allow, as a priority for farms with a strengthened biosecurity regime, the gradual repopulation of pigs killed following the establishment of the red zone (source: Calabria Region).
