Day of comparison
A meeting with the territories to take stock of the management of the African Swine Fever (ASF) emergency and the measures implemented to protect farms and the pig supply chain. These are the issues at the center of the meetings held today in Piacenza and Parma, with the participation of the regional councilors for Agriculture, Alessio Mammi, and for Health Policies, Massimo Fabi, the Extraordinary Commissioner for ASF, Giovanni Filippini, local authorities, consortia and agricultural and industrial associations. A strategic meeting to share strategies and actions aimed at combating the disease. A day of discussion as already done in the past, which will be followed, in the coming weeks, by other stages in other provinces, with the aim of taking stock of a common strategy to contain and combat the spread of the virus and safeguard a supply chain – that of cured meats – which represents a fundamental sector of the agri-food sector, both for Emilia-Romagna and at a national level.
A heritage to be safeguarded
“Teamwork,” Mammi and Fabi emphasize, “is essential to identify and implement effective measures to contain and combat the spread of the virus. The Region is paying maximum attention and collaborating fully with the commissioner structure to protect and ensure the stability of a supply chain that represents an indispensable asset to be safeguarded, both from an economic and social point of view. We are talking about hundreds of companies, large, medium and small, and thousands of workers. A sector with a very strong international vocation, which represents the present and future of the agri-food sector, both nationally and in Emilia-Romagna.” To date, the resources deployed by the Region to combat PSA exceed 14 million euros. “But we are ready to do even more, and to invest further resources,” Mammi adds, “to intervene, both in terms of depopulating wild boars and for biosecurity in farms. Starting with the reconfirmation, for 2025, of the million euros allocated to the Provinces, which will be increased if necessary, precisely to strengthen the measures to contain wild species, a possible vehicle for the transmission of the virus".
The situation in Emilia-Romagna
Today's meeting is part of the emergency management plan already launched by the Region, which includes the installation of physical barriers to contain the spread of the virus, the strengthening of biosecurity measures in farms and the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance. In Emilia-Romagna, two outbreaks in domestic pigs have been recorded, both in the Piacenza area. The Region has responded with extraordinary measures, activating territorial operational groups in the most affected provinces, Piacenza and Parma, but also in Reggio Emilia, Modena and Bologna, and publishing calls for the depopulation of wild boars, with targeted culling and the introduction of traps to capture infected animals. The regional administration has invested 3 million euros for depopulation and 11 million for the strengthening of biosecurity measures, both inside and outside farms. Thanks to the coordination with the Extraordinary Commissioner, a Control Room was also established to optimize the use of available resources and ensure timely and structured interventions, with the aim of containing the spread of PSA and protecting a crucial sector for the regional economy (source: Emilia Romagna Region).
