Restriction III
Restriction Zone III has been revoked in Emilia-Romagna, in the Piacenza area, for measures to combat the spread of African swine fever. The European Commission decided this in recent days in the regulation that periodically establishes the special measures to be adopted for the control of ASF, thus acknowledging the good results achieved thanks to the prevention measures in farms implemented in Emilia-Romagna. Restriction III, which is applied in the territories where cases of positive pigs are found in domestic farms, was triggered at the end of July 2024 in the Piacenza area, after the discovery of a single outbreak in the Province and numerous others in the neighboring Regions. The virus is therefore not present today in Emilia-Romagna farms.
Virus not spread
"With the removal of Zone III, restrictions for livestock farms in the area are decreasing, a topic on which the Region had been strongly committed since August to obtain exemptions for the movement of meat and compensation for the companies involved - explains the regional councilor for Agriculture, Alessio Mammi -. It is also positive that from the certified data it was possible to find that in wild animals the virus has not spread to other areas, thanks to the measures implemented to contain wild boars, from which it follows that the restricted areas remain those of last March". "Fundamental - adds the councilor - is the synergy that was activated immediately between the two regional departments for Health Policies and Agriculture and agri-food, hunting and fishing, which led to the formal establishment of both a regional and territorial operational group in the provinces of Piacenza and Parma, subject to restrictions, but also in the other provinces of the region, groups to which we extend our thanks, as well as to the veterinary services, for the surveillance and monitoring activity carried out". Meanwhile, regional measures to prevent and combat the spread of the virus continue. The fourth call for interventions to support investments in biosecurity is open until December. 1,4 million euros from the Rural Development Plan are available for work to be carried out and reported by autumn 2025.
Call for agricultural entrepreneurs
The call is aimed at agricultural entrepreneurs in Emilia-Romagna, individuals or associations, owners of establishments or owners of pigs raised in establishments or outdoors in the wild and semi-wild state. The contribution ranges from a minimum of 5 thousand euros to a maximum of 150 thousand, for a support percentage of 70% of the eligible investment cost. Expenses for the purchase of perimeter or electric anti-intrusion fences for semi-wild farms are eligible. Funds are also provided for the purchase and installation of other effective tools in combating the disease such as areas for disinfecting vehicles, the creation of filter zones for farm staff and visitors, the purchase of refrigerated cells for the storage of carcasses. Applications can be submitted by December 20 exclusively online on the Agrea Agricultural Information System. In total, the three previous calls for proposals have collected 173 requests for support, for approximately 190 farms involved in the intervention (source: Emilia Romagna Region).
