Tomorrow's day
On 27 February the European Parliament will vote on the text of the law on "nature restoration" agreed last year in a trilogue by the negotiating groups of the European Parliament and the Council. After the vote of the European Parliament, the Council will also approve the text. The 2023 agreement between the European Parliament and the Council on the law on restoration of nature represents a positive step towards restoring essential habitats that are in critical condition.
The negotiation process
FACE hopes to see a positive vote in plenary tomorrow, which will put in place the necessary framework to reverse biodiversity loss in rural areas in collaboration with key stakeholders. Legal measures considered burdensome were removed during the lengthy negotiation process. The text is now the bare minimum to allow environmental restoration. Failure to adopt the regulation at this stage would represent a serious step backwards.
FACE projects
In the future, successful implementation will depend on strong political support and the support of all rural stakeholders. This includes farmers, land managers, foresters, fishermen and hunters, whose collective action can translate policies in Brussels into successful initiatives on the ground. Through the Biodiversity Manifesto, FACE has collected hundreds of small-scale restoration projects run by local hunters in Europe. It is vital to recognize the significant progress already achieved through this work by hunters across the EU. The Wildlife Restoration Act offers a unique opportunity to scale up these actions with nationwide planning and dedicated resources.
