Restore balance
The extraordinary plan was approved during the Coldiretti Lazio sit-in this morning in front of the Region wild boar containment. A measure requested by Coldiretti Lazio already last June 13th at the Auditorium Parco della Musica. “It is a strategic resolution for us – says the president of Coldiretti Lazio, David Granieri – because it puts the agricultural world back at the center and above all it gives us the possibility of restoring the balance. We have no interest in upsetting anything except what upset our lives twenty years ago. This year alone, over twelve million euros of damage has been suffered by our farmers due to wildlife." Coldiretti Lazio's requests relating to the participation of farmers in the containment of wildlife were accepted in the resolution approved today by the Region.
Farmers to be trained
“It is important for the agricultural world to be able to collaborate in containment – continues Granieri – to be able to set up a voluntary body of gardeners to coordinate the work, train farmers and above all the implementation of the Plan also in the park areas, where the substitutive power of region exists and whoever does not adopt the resolution can be replaced. We farmers must be able to produce, because we are continually under attack, as is the Mediterranean Diet." Thousands of farmers took to the streets from all over Lazio to ask for the immediate adoption of the extraordinary plan for the management and containment of uncontrolled wildlife, ensuring that the measures envisaged by the inter-ministerial decree launched last year are applied at a local level. In the square the damaged fruit and vegetables and the one saved from the wild boars, which were donated to the citizens and then signs with slogans "Enough wild boars", "We sow, the wild boars harvest", "Boars danger for motorists".
Damage in the countryside
The spotlight is on not only on the damage in the countryside, which in Lazio has largely exceeded ten million euros, with harvests halved by 80% up to peaks of 100% and consequent zero income for farms, but also on the defense of the Mediterranean Diet, threatened by the presence of herds of ungulates, which have exceeded 250 thousand presences and the safety of citizens. In our Region alone, there were 2023 road accidents caused by wild animals in 15 with injured people and last month in Rome a motorcyclist lost his life while riding his scooter. This is what emerges from the report drawn up by Asaps, the Association of Supporters and Friends of the Traffic Police, which last year recorded 193 significant accidents involving animals at a national level, an increase of 7,8% compared to the previous year. 11 people lost their lives in accidents last year. It is also underlined by ASAPS that accidents with damage only to vehicles and not to people number several thousand every year but it is difficult to make a calculation because in many cases the motorists involved do not report the accident knowing that it is unlikely that the damages will be reimbursed (source: Coldiretti).
